To Judge or Not to Judge

Each of us have strong convictions about certain things. Others may have different opinions. When you interact with someone who disagrees, how do you handle it? I was listening to a study on Romans where they talk about disputes within the church. Some of these disputes are based on the gospel and salvation and should be disputed. While other matters are opinions, and we ought to respect other’s convictions and learn to love each other first and not quarrel over things that do not matter. That is what Jesus is trying to tell us in this parable.

Today we are talking about figs. Kind of an odd thing to talk about, but in Jesus’ day a fig was a regular staple. Jesus told 3 different parables at different times using figs as a symbolic example.

Known By Our Fruit

The fruit of the plant will show how healthy it is. The fruit is used to produce more and it is good food. Jesus speaks of fruit in his parables to describe our faith to teach us about discernment. A good tree bears good fruit but a bad tree bears bad fruit.

Vine and Branches

Many of Jesus’ parables relate to Israel’s way of life. Many people understood about sheepherding, vineyards and olive groves. That was their lifestyle. Jesus would teach with relatable stories. In this parable He teaches that our relationship with Him is much like a grape vine and its branches.
