Pergamos: Stay Away From False Teachers

Jesus says that Pergamos was surrounded by evil. It is “where Satan’s throne is.” The church held fast to their faith in Christ, but couldn’t let go of the teachings of the Nicolaitans and those who held to the doctrine of Balaam which included sacrificing to idols and sexual immorality as well as sorcery. You may say we don’t practice sorcery. But it is all around us. Horoscopes, tarot cards, Ouija boards, and we watch movies and shows that actually applaud immorality or sorcery. I think of shows like Practical Magic, Lucifer, and, yes, I said it, Harry Potter. The examples of immorality on TV and movies, politics and society in general are endless. Let’s take a look at what Jesus says about tolerating, condoning, or participating in such beliefs and practices.

The Angel of the Lord and Gideon

The story of Gideon is an interesting one.  Jesus came to him and the Bible called Him “The LORD,” “The Angel of the Lord,” and “The Angel of God.”  God was going to save His people, the Israelites through this man, who was the least of the weakest clan.  God chose him for that reason, so that people would see that it was God, not man, that saved them.  Something we in this society need to remember.  No man will save us.  Only through Jesus Christ, through His death and resurrection, through His blood, are we saved; not through any good deeds or how good we are, but what He has done and how good He is.  Same with our country.  No president or no one in Congress will save us from the mess we are in.  We need to pray to God for our leaders and our country and this country needs to repent and turn toward Him so that He will heal our land.

So, God called Gideon to trust Him and He would work through him.  As Gideon steps forward, God uses him with 300 men to defeat the army of Midian.  At first, Gideon had doubts.  He had excuses.  He asked for a sign…a couple times.  God had patience and gave him the faith he needed.  He reminded him that He would always be there for him and that He would do the work through him.  So the story begins… Continue reading “The Angel of the Lord and Gideon”

Jesus reaffirms Covenant with Abraham

Before Isaac was born to Abraham and Sarah, God appeared to Him in person.  The scriptures speak of God speaking to him, but in Genesis chapter 18, He appears to Him.  Is this Jesus?  He is not described as “The Angel of the Lord” but it is clearly the Lord.  In the chapter before this, God speaks to Abraham of the covenant, that He would have a son when Abraham is 100 years old.  God tells him that the covenant is not through Ishmael, the child born through their own efforts by the bondwoman, Hagar, but would be through the child born of God, by a miracle, through Sarah, who is well beyond her years of childbirth. The Angel of the Lord and the Bondwoman

Jesus also revealed Himself through Hagar, one of Sarah’s maids. Abram and Sarai (who god later named Abraham and Sarah)  were waiting for God to fulfill His promise of a child.  They decided to try to do it their way in their timing instead of God’s so Abraham had a child through one of his servants. Why do we always think we have a better way than God?   God’s ways are ALWAYS better than our ways.  It never works out when we try to do things on our own.  . This case was no different.  And Hagar was caught in the middle of it.  But Jesus came to Hagar and gave her comfort. Wrestling with God

In our discussions about Jesus, the instances referred to Him as “The Angel of the Lord.”  There are also instance that He appears and is described differently.  In some cases, we are not sure it is actually Jesus, or God the Father, or The Holy Spirit, but there are some clues and there is a good indication that it is Jesus.  Regardless, we know it is God and it does point to our Savior, The Messiah, Jesus Christ.  In each case, there is a lesson for us.  One lesson that is common throughout scripture, is to trust in the Lord.
