Knowing We are Saved and the Assurances and Promises God Gave Us

God gives us grace. God gives us mercy. The Bible says that He wills that no one would perish but all come to repentance. But He gives us a choice. And with that choice, He gives us assurance. He has promised believers many things and He always keeps His promise. He promises us that all who believe in His Son will have eternal life. He assures us of that. He says He will never leave us or forsake us, and nothing can separate us from His love.

John 10:27-30

“My sheep hear My voice, and I know them, and they follow Me. And I give them eternal life, and they shall never perish; neither shall anyone snatch them out of My hand. My Father, who has given them to Me, is greater than all; and no one is able to snatch them out of My Father’s hand. I and My Father are one.”

Jesus loves us so much that He died for us; He took our sins and paid the full penalty for all who believe. We are now His children and nothing can change that.

Romans 8:33-39

Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us. Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE KILLED ALL DAY LONG; WE ARE ACCOUNTED AS SHEEP FOR THE SLAUGHTER.”

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

Our salvation is not based on the things we do. If it were, we would all be in trouble. Many believe we can lose our salvation. But if that were true, then salvation is based on what we do, and not what Christ did. But, you can decide for yourself (read What is our Assurance? Part 1 and What is our Assurance? Part 2 ).

Ephesians 2:4-10

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus. For by grace you have been saved through faith, and that not of yourselves; it is the gift of God, not of works, lest anyone should boast. For we are His workmanship, created in Christ Jesus for good works, which God prepared beforehand that we should walk in them.

We have been saved by God’s grace. Jesus took our penalty for us. Nothing we can do can earn salvation. It is a gift that we accept. It is not our works, but our faith in Jesus Christ that brings us to salvation. And when we accept that gift, He gives us the Holy Spirit to help us grow in our salvation. The Holy Spirit is our guarantee. We are sealed. Nothing can separate us from the love of God. No one can snatch us out of His hands.

2 Corinthians 1:21-22

Now He who establishes us with you in Christ and has anointed us is God, who also has sealed us and given us the Spirit in our hearts as a guarantee.

As we have mentioned in the previous post, when we follow Christ, we are adopted into His family. We receive an inheritance. What greater inheritance than eternal life with Him? Not only that but we have joy and peace on this earth, and we have that hope and assurance by the Holy Spirit, who is our guarantee of God’s promise to us, who has sealed us for that day when we go to be with Him.

Ephesians 1:11-14

In Him also we have obtained an inheritance, being predestined according to the purpose of Him who works all things according to the counsel of His will, that we who first trusted in Christ should be to the praise of His glory. In Him you also trusted, after you heard the word of truth, the gospel of your salvation; in whom also, having believed, you were sealed with the Holy Spirit of promise, who is the guarantee of our inheritance until the redemption of the purchased possession, to the praise of His glory.

This is God’s promise to us: that if we believe with our heart we are saved. That if we trust in Christ we will receive an inheritance and be part of His family. That when we are saved, we are sealed and the Holy Spirit indwells us as a guarantee of that promise. Jesus has redeemed us through His sacrifice. He has conquered death and sin and has given us that victory.

Colossians 1:13-14

He has delivered us from the power of darkness and conveyed us into the kingdom of the Son of His love, in whom we have redemption through His blood, the forgiveness of sins.

Notice the tense in these verses: He has delivered us…we have obtained…we have redemption: it has already been accomplished! It is not something we strive to obtain, or something that can be taken away from us. It is something we received. We are God’s children. We always will be. He will never leave us or forsake us. Our salvation is now and has been since we believed. He promised us that and He does not (not never!) relent on His promises.

John 5:24

“Most assuredly, I say to you, he who hears My word and believes in Him who sent Me has everlasting life, and shall not come into judgment, but has passed from death into life.”

Plain and simple. We are His. If we believe with our heart, we are saved; we will have eternal life. He will be our God and we will be His people. We will be with Him forever. Jesus told us He has prepared a place for us to be with Him for all eternity.

John 14:1-4

“Let not your heart be troubled; you believe in God, believe also in Me. In My Father’s house are many mansions; if it were not so, I would have told you. I go to prepare a place for you. And if I go and prepare a place for you, I will come again and receive you to Myself; that where I am, there you may be also. And where I go you know, and the way you know.”

So we have much to be encouraged about. We can know we will be in heaven. We have been given that promise. In the next posts, we will discuss what to look out for, and how we know, without a doubt, that we are truly saved.
