In the final moments of Jesus’ life on earth, He surrenders His spirit to the Father. His trust is in the Father. This is another example He sets for us…to put our trust in the Lord and surrender to Him. He is our strength. He is our Redeemer.
Luke 23:44-47
Now it was about the sixth hour, and there was darkness over all the earth until the ninth hour. Then the sun was darkened, and the veil of the temple was torn in two. And when Jesus had cried out with a loud voice, He said, “Father, ‘INTO YOUR HANDS I COMMIT MY SPIRIT.’ “ Having said this, He breathed His last. So when the centurion saw what had happened, he glorified God, saying, “Certainly this was a righteous Man!”
Here, Jesus quotes Psalm 31:5. This is a Psalm of trust as well as lament. Even when things are tough, we can always trust in God. Although Jesus is suffering and dying, with all that He went through, His trust was in His Father. In the garden, He prayed that there would be another way. But, He said, “Not My will, but Your will be done.” Do we have that kind of trust as David and Jesus showed?”
Psalms 31:1-5
In You, O LORD, I put my trust; Let me never be ashamed; Deliver me in Your righteousness. Bow down Your ear to me, deliver me speedily; Be my rock of refuge, a fortress of defense to save me. For You are my rock and my fortress; Therefore, for Your name’s sake, lead me and guide me. Pull me out of the net which they have secretly laid for me, for You are my strength. Into Your hand I commit my spirit; You have redeemed me, O LORD God of truth.
David cries out to the Lord for deliverance. Jesus’ on the other hand, is on the cross to deliver us. He was not asking to be delivered here. He was offering His life for ours. He was redeeming us. As he surrenders His spirit to the Father, let us surrender our lives to Him.
Philippians 2:5-11
Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.
Jesus Christ, in His divine nature, became a man for us. He was tempted He went through all those things in life we go through so that He could relate to us, though being perfect, He sacrificed Himself for our sakes. He was obedient to the Father to the point of death, spilling His blood for our redemption. There is no one greater than Jesus. Let us bow down and worship Him for all that He has done for us.
Matthew 16:24-27
Then Jesus said to His disciples, “If anyone desires to come after Me, let him deny himself, and take up his cross, and follow Me. For whoever desires to save his life will lose it, but whoever loses his life for My sake will find it. For what profit is it to a man if he gains the whole world, and loses his own soul? Or what will a man give in exchange for his soul? For the Son of Man will come in the glory of His Father with His angels, and then He will reward each according to his works.”
Jesus went through all of that so that we would believe. He has reconciled us. The veil was torn showing us that we now have direct access to God. We no longer are under the curse of the Fall. If we follow Him, we are saved. If we have faith in the one and only Son of God, we will have eternal life. He has revealed Himself as the Son of God, our Redeemer, our Savior. The Roman centurion saw it. Matthew reports that the Centurion exclaimed that Jesus was the Son of God. Many have seen and believed; many have faith to see. Thank you Jesus, for committing your spirit for us.
