Our Cornerstone

In the last post we talked about the foundation of the church.  Christ is and always will be that foundation.  If a church does not center on Christ, if it does not teach scripture, it is a false church.  Jesus should be the center of the church and the center of our lives.  Our strength is in Him.  Our salvation is through Him.

Acts 4:8-12

Then Peter, filled with the Holy Spirit, said to them, “Rulers of the people and elders of Israel: If we this day are judged for a good deed done to a helpless man, by what means he has been made well, let it be known to you all, and to all the people of Israel, that by the name of Jesus Christ of Nazareth, whom you crucified, whom God raised from the dead, by Him this man stands here before you whole. This is the ‘stone which was rejected by you builders, which has become the chief cornerstone.’  Nor is there salvation in any other, for there is no other name under heaven given among men by which we must be saved.”

Philippians 2:5-11

Let this mind be in you which was also in Christ Jesus, who, being in the form of God, did not consider it robbery to be equal with God, but made Himself of no reputation, taking the form of a bondservant, and coming in the likeness of men. And being found in appearance as a man, He humbled Himself and became obedient to the point of death, even the death of the cross. Therefore God also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

As the church, we need to be grounded firmly in what the scriptures say.  We need to focus on Jesus Christ and we need to live by His example.  He has given us the Spirit so that He can work in us and through us.  Knowing this, we can have confidence that our faith would be strong, that the Spirit will guide us.  That the Lord is always there, to lift us up when we fall, to lead us through the storms of our life and to draw us near to Him.

For this reason I bow my knees to the Father of our Lord Jesus Christ,  from whom the whole family in heaven and earth is named, that He would grant you, according to the riches of His glory, to be strengthened with might through His Spirit in the inner man, that Christ may dwell in your hearts through faith; that you, being rooted and grounded in love, may be able to comprehend with all the saints what is the width and length and depth and height —  to know the love of Christ which passes knowledge; that you may be filled with all the fullness of God.

Now to Him who is able to do exceedingly abundantly above all that we ask or think, according to the power that works in us, to Him be glory in the church by Christ Jesus to all generations, forever and ever. Amen.

Ephesians 4:11-16

And He Himself gave some to be apostles, some prophets, some evangelists, and some pastors and teachers, for the equipping of the saints for the work of ministry, for the edifying of the body of Christ, till we all come to the unity of the faith and of the knowledge of the Son of God, to a perfect man, to the measure of the stature of the fullness of Christ; that we should no longer be children, tossed to and fro and carried about with every wind of doctrine, by the trickery of men, in the cunning craftiness of deceitful plotting, but, speaking the truth in love, may grow up in all things into Him who is the head — Christ — from whom the whole body, joined and knit together by what every joint supplies, according to the effective working by which every part does its share, causes growth of the body for the edifying of itself in love.

Whatever our gifts may be, it is for the glory of God.  It is to strengthen others.  It is to help us to grow.  It is to build on our foundation.

Proverbs 10:25

When the whirlwind passes by, the wicked is no more,

But the righteous has an everlasting foundation.

I lived in the far corner of Northeastern Washington with my beautiful wife, but now live in Wisconsin while I look for work. God has blessed me tremendously and so thankful for His grace and the people He has put in my life and His work in and around me.
