El Elyon, God Most High

Our God is described in many ways. He is the God most High. There are no other Gods besides Him. He is above all things and greater than anything we can imagine. He is Supreme and Ruler over all. I have found 2 different Hebrew words that mean God Most High. El Elyon, or Elyown shows the supremacy of God while El Illay shows the more personal, intimate side of the Most High God that connects God to His people, who is to be worshipped. He is big and powerful, yet He loves us and wants a relationship with us.

Everlasting God, El Olam

What do we know about our God? He is eternal. He is the Everlasting God. Hebrew scripture calls Him El Olam, or a form of this. He is the Creator of the universe and everything in it He has existed since the beginning of time and will always exist. He is “the One who is, and who was, and who is to come.” He was not created by man, but created man and woman. He is the all-powerful, all knowing, self-existent God. He is indescribable and beyond our imagination No one is like our God.

God’s Name: El Shaddai, God Almighty

God Almighty. The mighty name of God. He is the Sovereign Lord. The ruler of the universe. There is no other god but Him. He is El Shaddai. In Greek the word is Theos Pantokrator, a word used for God the Father and Jesus Christ. He is Lord of Lords and King of Kings. The name that is above all names.

Yahweh – The Name of God

When God was asked His name, He said, “Yahweh.” What does that mean? Most Bibles translate as “I am What I Am.” It is said that a more literal translation is “I Will Be Who I Will Be.” Kind of cryptic, huh? By what I have read, this is saying that He is the self-existent one. He is the eternal God and not a created being, which separate Him from all other gods. He always was and always will be. It sounds very similar to how the angels describe God in Revelation 4:8: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!”

Be the Church, Go to Church

Growing up, my parents made me go to church. It was a struggle. Every Sunday morning, every Sunday night, every Wednesday night, every church event, youth group, revival, Billy Graham Crusade, etc. Ugh! And you know what? Now that I am older, I am so thankful that they did. I learned who God was, I saw what it meant to be part of a church community (both the good and the bad), and I saw people who were good examples of how to serve as God would want us to serve. Of course, we all know that the “church” is the body of Christ, it is not a building, it is the people. It is a community, a family. As we discussed in the previous post, we are sons and daughters of God in Christ. We don’t just “go to church,” we are the church. Therefore, we need to gather together and be a part of the church.
