Everlasting God, El Olam

What do we know about our God? He is eternal. He is the Everlasting God. Hebrew scripture calls Him El Olam, or a form of this. He is the Creator of the universe and everything in it He has existed since the beginning of time and will always exist. He is “the One who is, and who was, and who is to come.” He was not created by man, but created man and woman. He is the all-powerful, all knowing, self-existent God. He is indescribable and beyond our imagination No one is like our God.

Isaiah 40:25-31

“To whom then will you liken Me, or to whom shall I be equal?” says the Holy One [Qadosh]. Lift up your eyes on high, and see who has created these things, who brings out their host by number; He calls them all by name, by the greatness of His might and the strength of His power; not one is missing. Why do you say, O Jacob, and speak, O Israel: “My way is hidden from the LORD [Yahweh], and my just claim is passed over by my God [Elohay]“?

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God [Elohe Owlam], the LORD [Yahweh], the Creator [Bowre] of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the LORD [Yahweh]shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.”

There are so many ways to try to describe our God and His character and we fall short because He is such a great God. He is the everlasting God, the self-sustaining God, who always was and always will be, who is all-knowing, all-powerful, and omnipresent. He is the one and only God. There are no other gods. Our God is three persons in One, Father, Son and Holy Spirit., all working as one, guiding us, leading us and redeeming us.

Deuteronomy 33:26-29

“There is no one like the God [El] of Jeshurun, who rides the heavens to help you, and in His excellency on the clouds. The eternal God [Elohe qedem] is your refuge, and underneath are the everlasting [owlam] arms; He will thrust out the enemy from before you, and will say, ‘destroy!’ Then Israel shall dwell in safety, the fountain of Jacob alone, in a land of grain and new wine; His heavens shall also drop dew. Happy are you, O Israel! Who is like you, a people saved by the LORD [Yahweh], the shield of your help and the sword of your majesty! Your enemies shall submit to you, and you shall tread down their high places.”

Our God, the God of Israel, the God of Jeshurun (which means “upright one” or “blessed one,” another name for Jacob) is the only true God. He is always there for us, even when we do not realize it, even when things are not going our way. He is faithful and He gives us hope, knowing that those who trust in Him will forever be with Him, and one day all our pain, fear and sadness will be gone. He is faithful and we can always trust in Him.

Isaiah 44:1-6

“Yet hear me now, O Jacob My servant, and Israel whom I have chosen. Thus says the LORD [Yahweh] who made you and formed you from the womb, who will help you: ‘Fear not, O Jacob My servant; and you, Jeshurun, whom I have chosen. For I will pour water on him who is thirsty, and floods on the dry ground; I will pour My Spirit on your descendants, and My blessing on your offspring; they will spring up among the grass like willows by the watercourses.’ One will say, ‘I am the LORD’s’ [Yahweh]; another will call himself by the name of Jacob; another will write with his hand, ‘The LORD’s [Yahweh],’ and name himself by the name of Israel. “Thus says the LORD [Yahweh],  the King of Israel, and his Redeemer, the LORD [Yahweh] of hosts: ‘I am the First and I am the Last; besides Me there is no God [Elohim].

And the Lord always keeps His promises. He is the One that we can all on, and that we can count on. He knows what is best and He is able and willing to do it.

Genesis 21:33

Then Abraham planted a tamarisk tree in Beersheba, and there called on the name of the LORD [Yahweh], the Everlasting God [El Owlam].

Isaiah 26:4

Trust in the LORD [Yahweh] forever, For in YAH, the LORD [Yahweh], is everlasting [owlamim] strength.

He is the God who created us. There are no limits as to what He can do. And He loves us and will always do what is right. He has always been there and always will.

Psalms 90:1-4

A Prayer Of Moses the Man of God [Elohim].

LORD [Adonai], You have been our dwelling place in all generations. Before the mountains were brought forth, or ever You had formed the earth and the world, even from everlasting to everlasting [owlam], You are God [El]. You turn man to destruction, and say, “Return, O children of men.” For a thousand years in Your sight are like yesterday when it is past, and like a watch in the night.

Not only is God everlasting, but so is His patience, love and grace. He will not give up on us. He will work in our lives and will wait until everyone who will turn to Him will.

2 Peter 3:8-9

But, beloved, do not forget this one thing, that with the Lord one day is as a thousand years, and a thousand years as one day. The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

How thankful I am that we have an everlasting God. One that we can always rely on. One who loves me enough to never give up on me. One who provided a way of salvation and gives me hope that one day I will be with him for eternity in heaven. And He offers that to everyone.

Psalms 93:1-5

The LORD [Yahweh] reigns, He is clothed with majesty; the LORD [Yahweh] is clothed, He has girded Himself with strength. Surely the world is established, so that it cannot be moved. Your throne is established from of old; You are from everlasting [owlam]. The floods have lifted up, O LORD [Yahweh], The floods have lifted up their voice; the floods lift up their waves. The LORD [Yahweh] on high is mightier than the noise of many waters, than the mighty waves of the sea. Your testimonies are very sure; holiness adorns Your house, O LORD [Yahweh], forever.

There are so many descriptions of the Lord in the Bible, but none of them can fully explain how great a God He is. As we study the “names” of God in this series, we can get a glimpse of who He is, what His character is, the faithfulness of God, and just how big He is (powerful and eternal). Along with the name of El Olam, He is also referred to as “The Ancient of Days,” another way to describe His eternal being as Daniel describes Him in Daniel 7:

Daniel 7:9-10, 13-14, 27

I watched till thrones were put in place, and the Ancient of Days [Attiq yowmin] was seated; His garment was white as snow, and the hair of His head was like pure wool. His throne was a fiery flame, its wheels a burning fire; a fiery stream issued and came forth from before Him. A thousand thousands ministered to Him; ten thousand times ten thousand stood before Him. The court was seated, and the books were opened.

“I was watching in the night visions, and behold, One like the Son of Man, coming with the clouds of heaven! He came to the Ancient of Days [Attiq yowmin], and they brought Him near before Him. Then to Him was given dominion and glory and a kingdom, that all peoples, nations, and languages should serve Him. His dominion is an everlasting dominion, which shall not pass away, and His kingdom the one which shall not be destroyed.”

This description is much like that in Revelation when John describes the throne room of heaven with God the Father sitting on the throne with Jesus Christ at His right hand. See also Revelation 4.

Revelation 1:4-8

John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God and Father, to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord, “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty.”

Throughout scripture not only is God’s love and character shown throughout the Bible, and His names reveal who He is, but from beginning to end, God’s Word points to Jesus, our Savior and our God, who came to this earth to die for our sins, who conquered sin and death on the cross and in the tomb, and who lives forever.
