God the Father: Who is He?

As we dive into what the Trinity is all about, we will look at each person of the Trinity, the Godhead. Who is God the Father? If you had a good father here on earth, God the Father is so much more. He created us, and He loves us. He knows what is best and will accomplish it. If your relationship with your earthly father was not great, you know there is a Father in heaven who loves and will never harm you. He is Almighty God who is powerful and strong, but yet gentle and kind. He is just and He is merciful. There is so much to Our Father in Heaven that is beyond our comprehension, that is indescribable. But one thing we do know is He loves us and wants an intimate relationship with us. So, who is God the Father?

Isaiah 40:28-31

Have you not known? Have you not heard? The everlasting God, the LORD, the Creator of the ends of the earth, neither faints nor is weary. His understanding is unsearchable. He gives power to the weak, and to those who have no might He increases strength. Even the youths shall faint and be weary, and the young men shall utterly fall, but those who wait on the LORD shall renew their strength; they shall mount up with wings like eagles, they shall run and not be weary, they shall walk and not faint.

God the Father is so much greater and so much stronger than we could imagine. He is beyond comprehension. He created everything with a word. He created us in His (Their) image. We have some of His attributes in us. His character, His faithfulness, His love. Hopefully, some of that will come out in us. But we come short. But He loves us anyway. He provides for us. He gives us grace. And His word is true.

Isaiah 55:8-11

“For My thoughts are not your thoughts, nor are your ways My ways,” says the LORD. “For as the heavens are higher than the earth, so are My ways higher than your ways, and My thoughts than your thoughts. “For as the rain comes down, and the snow from heaven, and do not return there, but water the earth, and make it bring forth and bud, that it may give seed to the sower and bread to the eater, so shall My word be that goes forth from My mouth; it shall not return to Me void, but it shall accomplish what I please, and it shall prosper in the thing for which I sent it.”

God provides. He gives us rain, he gives us food, He gives us His word. And it does not come void. He gives us love and grace. He saved us through His Son who He sent as a ransom for our sins.

Ephesians 2:4-7

But God, who is rich in mercy, because of His great love with which He loved us, even when we were dead in trespasses, made us alive together with Christ (by grace you have been saved), and raised us up together, and made us sit together in the heavenly places in Christ Jesus, that in the ages to come He might show the exceeding riches of His grace in His kindness toward us in Christ Jesus.

More on God the Son in the next post. The Father loves us so much that He sent His only Son to die for us. His mercy is boundless. His love is beyond measure.

1 John 4:7-10

Beloved, let us love one another, for love is of God; and everyone who loves is born of God and knows God. He who does not love does not know God, for God is love. In this the love of God was manifested toward us, that God has sent His only begotten Son into the world, that we might live through Him. In this is love, not that we loved God, but that He loved us and sent His Son to be the propitiation for our sins.

Let us love each other because God loves us. His love is greater than any love we could imagine. Nothing can separate us from that love.

Romans 8:31-39

What then shall we say to these things? If God is for us, who can be against us? He who did not spare His own Son, but delivered Him up for us all, how shall He not with Him also freely give us all things? Who shall bring a charge against God’s elect? It is God who justifies. Who is he who condemns? It is Christ who died, and furthermore is also risen, who is even at the right hand of God, who also makes intercession for us.

Who shall separate us from the love of Christ? Shall tribulation, or distress, or persecution, or famine, or nakedness, or peril, or sword? As it is written: “FOR YOUR SAKE WE ARE KILLED ALL DAY LONG; WE ARE ACCOUNTED AS SHEEP FOR THE SLAUGHTER.”

Yet in all these things we are more than conquerors through Him who loved us. For I am persuaded that neither death nor life, nor angels nor principalities nor powers, nor things present nor things to come, nor height nor depth, nor any other created thing, shall be able to separate us from the love of God which is in Christ Jesus our Lord.

This scripture shows the intertwining of God the Father and God the Son. God loved us so much that He sent His Son to die for us. He made a way for each one of us to be saved through the blood of Christ, that is through His death and resurrection as a payment for our sins. He has promised us eternal life if we accept that gift and trust in Him. And He always keeps His promises.

2 Peter 3:9

The Lord is not slack concerning His promise, as some count slackness, but is longsuffering toward us, not willing that any should perish but that all should come to repentance.

Nehemiah 1:5

And I said: “I pray, LORD God of heaven, O great and awesome God, You who keep Your covenant and mercy with those who love You and observe Your commandments…

Our Father in Heaven is holy. He is loving but just. He is merciful and always keeps His promise. He created all things and is the Almighty. Yet no matter how much we turn from him, He loves us. His desire is to have a relationship with us.

Isaiah 57:15-19

For thus says the High and Lofty One Who inhabits eternity, whose name is Holy: “I dwell in the high and holy place, with him who has a contrite and humble spirit, to revive the spirit of the humble, and to revive the heart of the contrite ones. For I will not contend forever, nor will I always be angry; for the spirit would fail before Me, and the souls which I have made. For the iniquity of his covetousness I was angry and struck him; I hid and was angry, and he went on backsliding in the way of his heart. I have seen his ways, and will heal him; I will also lead him, and restore comforts to him and to his mourners. “I create the fruit of the lips: Peace, peace to him who is far off and to him who is near,” says the LORD, “and I will heal him.”

God is greater than we could even imagine. None of us are worthy to be in His presence or we would die. Thank God He sent His Son to be payment (a “propitiation”) for our sins. Through Christ’s sacrifice, we are declared righteous. God made a way to be in His presence. What would that be like? Only Moses was able to see God, and He only got a glimpse of part of Him.

Exodus 33:18-23

And he said, “Please, show me Your glory.” Then He said, “I will make all My goodness pass before you, and I will proclaim the name of the LORD before you. I will be gracious to whom I will be gracious, and I will have compassion on whom I will have compassion.” But He said, “You cannot see My face; for no man shall see Me, and live.” And the LORD said, “Here is a place by Me, and you shall stand on the rock. So it shall be, while My glory passes by, that I will put you in the cleft of the rock, and will cover you with My hand while I pass by. Then I will take away My hand, and you shall see My back; but My face shall not be seen.”

Can you imagine what it would be like to actually see God? Of being in His presence? What an incredible day that would be. John had a vision of what that will be like and he tried to describe it to us:

Revelation 4:2-11

Immediately I was in the Spirit; and behold, a throne set in heaven, and One sat on the throne. And He who sat there was like a jasper and a sardius stone in appearance; and there was a rainbow around the throne, in appearance like an emerald. Around the throne were twenty-four thrones, and on the thrones I saw twenty-four elders sitting, clothed in white robes; and they had crowns of gold on their heads. And from the throne proceeded lightnings, thunderings, and voices. Seven lamps of fire were burning before the throne, which are the seven Spirits of God. Before the throne there was a sea of glass, like crystal. And in the midst of the throne, and around the throne, were four living creatures full of eyes in front and in back. The first living creature was like a lion, the second living creature like a calf, the third living creature had a face like a man, and the fourth living creature was like a flying eagle. The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying: “Holy, holy, holy, Lord God Almighty, Who was and is and is to come!” Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying: “You are worthy, O Lord, to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created.”

One day we will see Him in all His glory. One day those of us who believe will be with Him. He will be our God and we will be His children. What a great day that will be!
