This week started out with some struggles at work. I was frustrated and angry. Someone said some things that really upset me. It was early in the day, so it put me in a bad mood for awhile and I was flustered. So, I prayed. I prayed to clear my head and to not allow this affect my thoughts, my mood or how I treated others. I prayed that I would have wisdom and that I would do my job well and that I would be a light to those around me. I think to the most part, I was able to do that. The Bible says, “be angry and do not sin,” or another version is something like “do not sin in your anger.” I think I did pretty well, but the person I was most angry at was gone by the time I got back from underground (I am a geologist in an underground mine, so I was away from most of the people in the office). As I was thinking about that this morning, I was thinking of one of God’s promises, that He is always with me and He will help me to overcome whatever situation I may be in. As a child of God, I have this confidence.
1 John 4:4
You are of God, little children, and have overcome them, because He who is in you is greater than he who is in the world.
1 John 5:1-5
Whoever believes that Jesus is the Christ is born of God, and everyone who loves Him who begot also loves him who is begotten of Him. By this we know that we love the children of God, when we love God and keep His commandments. For this is the love of God, that we keep His commandments. And His commandments are not burdensome. For whatever is born of God overcomes the world. And this is the victory that has overcome the world — our faith. Who is he who overcomes the world, but he who believes that Jesus is the Son of God?
God gives us the faith so that we can overcome the world. Our flesh, the things this world offers, the people around you all try to influence you that there is something better than what God has to offer. Don’t believe the lies. Satan is out to devour and kill, especially knowing that his time is short. He will feed you these lies and there are temptations all around us. But God assures us that we can trust in Him and that through the blood of Jesus we can stand strong against whatever comes our way. It is not our strength, but His.
1 Corinthians 10:12-13
Therefore let him who thinks he stands take heed lest he fall. No temptation has overtaken you except such as is common to man; but God is faithful, who will not allow you to be tempted beyond what you are able, but with the temptation will also make the way of escape, that you may be able to bear it.
God can show His strength in our weakness. Even when we are weak and give in to temptation, Jesus is there for us. He paid the price for all our sins. He promises us that if we confess our sins, we will be forgiven. I thank God for that. Let us keep our faith and always turn to Him.
1 John 1:9-2:2
If we confess our sins, He is faithful and just to forgive us our sins and to cleanse us from all unrighteousness. If we say that we have not sinned, we make Him a liar, and His word is not in us.
My little children, these things I write to you, so that you may not sin. And if anyone sins, we have an Advocate with the Father, Jesus Christ the righteous. And He Himself is the propitiation for our sins, and not for ours only but also for the whole world.
Jesus made a promise. He promised that we will struggle, but He also promised that He is with us and that we can overcome because He has overcome.
“These things I have spoken to you, that in Me you may have peace. In the world you will have tribulation; but be of good cheer, I have overcome the world.”
Then I heard a loud voice saying in heaven, “Now salvation, and strength, and the kingdom of our God, and the power of His Christ have come, for the accuser of our brethren, who accused them before our God day and night, has been cast down. And they overcame him by the blood of the Lamb and by the word of their testimony, and they did not love their lives to the death. Therefore rejoice, O heavens, and you who dwell in them! Woe to the inhabitants of the earth and the sea! For the devil has come down to you, having great wrath, because he knows that he has a short time.”
As I mentioned before, the devil is seeking who He may devour. He is seeking ways to make us stumble and to prevent us from showing our light and sharing the gospel that others may be saved. He wants us to feel guilty and downtrodden, discouraged and weak., But we have the blood of the Lamb. We can rely on Christ’s sacrifice. He is our strength and no one can take that away because we have Christ in us. He will never leave us or forsake us.
If I ascend into heaven, You are there;
If I make my bed in hell, behold, You are there.
If I take the wings of the morning,
And dwell in the uttermost parts of the sea,
Even there Your hand shall lead me,
And Your right hand shall hold me.
If I say, “Surely the darkness shall fall on me,”
Even the night shall be light about me
Now to Him who is able to keep you from stumbling,
And to present you faultless
Before the presence of His glory with exceeding joy,
To God our Savior,
Who alone is wise,
Be glory and majesty,
Dominion and power,
Both now and forever.
