God’s Name: El Shaddai, God Almighty

God Almighty. The mighty name of God. He is the Sovereign Lord. The ruler of the universe. There is no other god but Him. He is El Shaddai. In Greek the word is Theos Pantokrator, a word used for God the Father and Jesus Christ. He is Lord of Lords and King of Kings. The name that is above all names.

Genesis 17:1-4

When Abram was ninety-nine years old, the LORD [Yahweh] appeared to Abram and said to him, “I am Almighty God [El Shaddai]; walk before Me and be blameless. And I will make My covenant between Me and you, and will multiply you exceedingly.” Then Abram fell on his face, and God [Elohim] talked with him, saying: “As for Me, behold, My covenant is with you, and you shall be a father of many nations.

From the beginning, as man encountered God, people of faith called Him El Shaddai, Almighty God. He is the God who created us, He is the God who is strong and we can trust and depend on; He is the faithful God who comes to us, seeking a relationship and making wonderful promises that He always keeps. He chose Abram (who later God named Him Abraham) and made a covenant with him to be a great nation and to bless all the earth through him. As we will see, He did just that. As Jacob (who God renamed Israel) blesses Joseph, he points to Almighty God. He remembers the covenant that God would bless the earth through him

Genesis 49:22-26

“Joseph is a fruitful bough, a fruitful bough by a well; his branches run over the wall. The archers have bitterly grieved him, shot at him and hated him. But his bow remained in strength, and the arms of his hands were made strong by the hands of the Mighty God [Abir] of Jacob (from there is the Shepherd, the Stone of Israel), by the God [El] of your father who will help you, and by the Almighty [Shadday] who will bless you with blessings of heaven above, blessings of the deep that lies beneath, blessings of the breasts and of the womb. The blessings of your father have excelled the blessings of my ancestors, up to the utmost bound of the everlasting hills. They shall be on the head of Joseph, and on the crown of the head of him who was separate from his brothers.”

Many of of us know the story of Joseph. His life was so much more than the robe of many colors. He was a man with integrity and was always faithful to the Lord even through the brutalities of His life. Through it all, He was used by Almighty God to save his family, to keep His covenant to Abraham and to bless the world. Joseph was brought to Egypt where he was shown by God that 7 years of famine would come and Joseph was given the wisdom to store up grain that provided food for Egypt, the surrounding people’s and the family of Jacob, who had 12 sons, who became the 12 tribes of Israel. Interestingly, though, God would send His Son to save the world from sin, not through the line of Joseph, but through Judah. Not through the faithful and obedient one in this case, but through one of Joseph’s brothers who threw him in a pit, then sold him as a slave. As He often does, God shows His might through our weakness. God uses the most unlikely people for great things. He used Ruth, a Moabitess, from the people who were enemies with Israel, to be the great grandmother of their greatest king, and our Savior.

Ruth 1:19-22

Now the two of them went until they came to Bethlehem. And it happened, when they had come to Bethlehem, that all the city was excited because of them; and the women said, “Is this Naomi?” But she said to them, “Do not call me Naomi; call me Mara, for the Almighty [Shadday] has dealt very bitterly with me. I went out full, and the LORD [Yahweh] has brought me home again empty. Why do you call me Naomi, since the LORD [Yahweh] has testified against me, and the Almighty [Shadday] has afflicted me?” So Naomi returned, and Ruth the Moabitess her daughter-in-law with her, who returned from the country of Moab. Now they came to Bethlehem at the beginning of barley harvest.

Sometimes we don’t understand why bad things happen to us. But as scriptures say, God works all things together for good to those who love God. He is Almighty God and He has a plan for us. Little did Naomi know that through her tragedy, she found security and friendship. Through her tragedy, she would be blessed. Through her tragedy, her daughter-in-law would pass on her name, and her descendants would become great kings, and ultimately the Son of God, Jesus Christ, the Savior of the world.

Ruth 4:13-17

So Boaz took Ruth and she became his wife; and when he went in to her, the LORD [Yahweh] gave her conception, and she bore a son. Then the women said to Naomi, “Blessed be the LORD [Yahweh], who has not left you this day without a close relative; and may his name be famous in Israel! And may he be to you a restorer of life and a nourisher of your old age; for your daughter-in-law, who loves you, who is better to you than seven sons, has borne him.”

Then Naomi took the child and laid him on her bosom, and became a nurse to him. Also the neighbor women gave him a name, saying, “There is a son born to Naomi.” And they called his name Obed. He is the father of Jesse, the father of David.

God Almighty had a plan. He always does. He is an awesome God who from the beginning of time loved us and had a plan of salvation. He created us with a free will to choose. Without that free will there could be no love. But man chose sin over God, and the wages of sin is death. So God sent His one and only Son to be sin for us. Through His death and resurrection we can be saved. That was God’s promise to Abraham when He said that all the nations would be blessed through him. And because of Jesus’ love and sacrifice, we can be saved and have victory over sin and death. So, at the name of Jesus, every knee will bow and every tongue will confess that Jesus Christ is Lord, to the glory of God the Father.

Philippians 2:9-11

Therefore God [Theos] also has highly exalted Him and given Him the name which is above every name, that at the name of Jesus every knee should bow, of those in heaven, and of those on earth, and of those under the earth, and that every tongue should confess that Jesus Christ is Lord [Kyrios], to the glory of God the Father [Theou Patros].

The New Testament is written in Greek, so it is hard to compare to the Hebrew language of the Old Testament. I am sure Greek and Hebrew scholars can. But looking at the context, there is no doubt that Jesus is God. That He is everlasting. That He is Almighty. In humility He was obedient unto death so that we may live. God the Father sent His Son to save us. Jesus was there at creation and all things were created through Him. He is Lord and worthy of praise.

Revelation 4:8-11

The four living creatures, each having six wings, were full of eyes around and within. And they do not rest day or night, saying:

“Holy, holy, holy, Lord [Kyrie] God [Theos] Almighty [Pantokratōr], who was and is and is to come!”

Whenever the living creatures give glory and honor and thanks to Him who sits on the throne, who lives forever and ever, the twenty-four elders fall down before Him who sits on the throne and worship Him who lives forever and ever, and cast their crowns before the throne, saying:

“You are worthy, O Lord [Kyrios Theos], to receive glory and honor and power; for You created all things, and by Your will they exist and were created.”

It is hard to say if this text is referring to God the Father or the Son; most likely it was the Father here. He is at the throne and Jesus is at His right hand. Revelation 1 describes the Father and the Son, Jesus Christ, in the throne room.

Revelation 1:4-8

John, to the seven churches which are in Asia: Grace to you and peace from Him who is and who was and who is to come, and from the seven Spirits who are before His throne, and from Jesus Christ, the faithful witness, the firstborn from the dead, and the ruler over the kings of the earth. To Him who loved us and washed us from our sins in His own blood, and has made us kings and priests to His God [Theos] and Father [Patri], to Him be glory and dominion forever and ever. Amen.

Behold, He is coming with clouds, and every eye will see Him, even they who pierced Him. And all the tribes of the earth will mourn because of Him. Even so, Amen.

“I am the Alpha and the Omega, the Beginning and the End,” says the Lord [Kyrios Theos], “who is and who was and who is to come, the Almighty [Pantokratōr].”

Through John, Jesus sends a letter to the churches, giving them instruction on continuing in the faith, and turning away from their complacency, heresies, and unfaithfulness. He also gives John a glimpse of heaven and the throne room, and what will happen in the end of days. It is called the Revelation of Jesus Christ. John describes the worship of God, and the elders bowing down and worshipping to the Father and the Son. Jesus describes Himself in the same way, and calls Himself Almighty. The Greek word is Pantokratōr. Strong’s defines it as “almighty; unrestricted power exercising absolute dominion.” Jesus Christ is God Almighty. He and the Father are one. God is who we turn to for everything. He is Almighty. He is our strength and our refuge. Trust in Him.

Psalms 91:1-2

He who dwells in the secret place of the Most High [Elyown] shall abide under the shadow of the Almighty [Day]. I will say of the LORD [Yahweh], “He is my refuge and my fortress; my God [Elohay], in Him I will trust.”
