In our last post we talked about Living Water. Here, Jesus says He is the bread of life. He sustains us. True life is only through Him. See the post, “I AMs…The Bread of Life.” (https://davesdailyscriptures.blog/2019/09/24/i-ams-the-bread-of-life/)
Jesus answered them and said, “Most assuredly, I say to you, you seek Me, not because you saw the signs, but because you ate of the loaves and were filled. Do not labor for the food which perishes, but for the food which endures to everlasting life, which the Son of Man will give you, because God the Father has set His seal on Him.”
Then they said to Him, “What shall we do, that we may work the works of God?”
Jesus answered and said to them, “This is the work of God, that you believe in Him whom He sent.”
Therefore they said to Him, “What sign will You perform then, that we may see it and believe You? What work will You do? Our fathers ate the manna in the desert; as it is written, ‘HE GAVE THEM BREAD FROM HEAVEN TO EAT.'”
Then Jesus said to them, “Most assuredly, I say to you, Moses did not give you the bread from heaven, but My Father gives you the true bread from heaven. For the bread of God is He who comes down from heaven and gives life to the world.”
Then they said to Him, “Lord, give us this bread always.”
And Jesus said to them, “I am the bread of life. He who comes to Me shall never hunger, and he who believes in Me shall never thirst. But I said to you that you have seen Me and yet do not believe. All that the Father gives Me will come to Me, and the one who comes to Me I will by no means cast out. For I have come down from heaven, not to do My own will, but the will of Him who sent Me. This is the will of the Father who sent Me, that of all He has given Me I should lose nothing, but should raise it up at the last day. And this is the will of Him who sent Me, that everyone who sees the Son and believes in Him may have everlasting life; and I will raise him up at the last day.”
Manna was sent by God to fulfill the Israelites’ hunger when they were in the wilderness. But our Spirit hungers for the true Bread. The people were looking for another sign, another miracle after Jesus fed the 5000 from a few loaves of bread. But He had something more in mind.
But He answered and said, “It is written, ‘MAN SHALL NOT LIVE BY BREAD ALONE, BUT BY EVERY WORD THAT PROCEEDS FROM THE MOUTH OF GOD.’ “
God’s word is the absolute truth. It will give you wisdom, encouragement and knowledge of who He is and how we can be saved and be followers of Jesus Christ. As believers, we have the Holy Spirit in us to give us greater understanding. He will guide us in our hearts and pray for us as we need. Jesus is the Word. He is the Bread of Life.
Jesus mentioned that with the bread that He gives us we will never go hungry. This symbolizes His flesh that He gave for us. Through His sacrifice, through His blood, through His grace we can have eternal life in which we will never hunger. We will hunger for more knowledge of God, but we will be sustained and be spiritually filled. Through His sacrifice, by His death on the cross, He gives us life; we are justified by Him. Nothing we can do will earn it. Jesus said that the work of God is to believe in Him.
1 Corinthians 11:23-26
For I received from the Lord that which I also delivered to you: that the Lord Jesus on the same night in which He was betrayed took bread; and when He had given thanks, He broke it and said, “Take, eat; this is My body which is broken for you; do this in remembrance of Me.” In the same manner He also took the cup after supper, saying, “This cup is the new covenant in My blood. This do, as often as you drink it, in remembrance of Me.” For as often as you eat this bread and drink this cup, you proclaim the Lord’s death till He comes.
Communion (The Lord’s Supper) is a symbolic act we do to remind us of the awesome gift that He gave to us…forgiveness of our sins, declaring us righteous before the Father. Come to Him for The Bread of Life.
